There are three ways to make seat upgradation with Virgin Atlantic, they are listed
below:
Pay for an upgrade
Every passenger deserves to travel like a king, you may do so by,
Visiting the Virgin Atlantic website.
Go to the “My booking” section and login using your credentials.
View the seat map and upgrade your seat.
Pay for any fare differences.

Upgrade using points
You may get a reward seat if you have Virgin Points, you just have to:
Check for availability
Look for reward seat availability in the month you are planning to travel.
Make a new booking
For now, you are limited to viewing direct flights (either with us or Delta) from the United
Kingdom, as well as the return journey. As soon as seats become available on your
preferred route, you can search for your reward ticket by selecting 'Book my reward
flight,' which will take you straight to the booking screen.

How many Virgin Points do you require?
Spending your points will allow you to upgrade your seat or cabin on your next flight, if
you have already booked it or are planning to book one. You can see how many points
you will need to upgrade to Premium or Upper Class below, or use our helpful table to
calculate how many points you will need by date and destination. Please note that you
cannot use your points to upgrade if your flight starts in first class but is operated by
another airline.

Bid for an upgrade
Upgrades are subject to availability on your flight, so if you are thinking about upgrading
—and why not?—you can make an offer on Your Bid, our online auction for upgrades. If
your bid gets accepted, you could very well get yourself a lavish new seat. If you miss
the opportunity to bid, it is still worthwhile to check for opportunities in My Booking or
ask us about upgrade options at the airport or contact our customer support at USAtollfree-number or +1 800 862 8621.
How bidding works?
To place a bid, all you have to do is tell us how much you are prepared to pay for an
upgrade. You can place bids as late as two days before the scheduled departure
date of your flight, and all bids will be evaluated between two and seven days
before that date.
If your booking includes more than one passenger, you will need to bid for each
passenger to receive the upgrade. For instance, if you are bidding for an upgrade
for your party of four and want to bid £100, you will need to bid £400. If your bid is
accepted, you will receive an email confirming your successful upgrade.
Up until two days prior to the departure date of your flight, you can modify or cancel
your bid; once your bid has been approved, there will be no further opportunities for
you to do so.
Seat Upgradation Fee
The amount (referred to as the "Upgrade amount") is determined for each passenger
and each sector and includes all relevant taxes, fees, levies, and carrier-imposed
surcharges. All fare regulations that were in place at the time of the original ticket
purchase are still in effect, including fare refunds.
No cash or credit substitutes will be provided, and upgrades are not transferrable to
another traveler.
Refunds on Seat Upgrade
After a Flex Upgrade has been confirmed, the following terms and conditions apply, and
even in cases where the ticket itself may be refundable, no refunds will be given:
a) Upgrade cancellations and changes are not allowed.
b) There will be no reimbursement or other compensation.
c) Route, date, or name changes are not allowed.

I booked the seat and cancelled after some time due to some emergency. I thought I will not get that much refund for my ticket but there customer care guided me and gave me almost 90% of my refund.
